Let us Pray: The Collect for Pentecost

Amen.

Please come on the evening of Pentecost Sunday, May 19th, starting at 5:00 pm in the sanctuary, for a prayerful choral evensong celebration of music and the Holy Spirit. The St. Paul's choir will lead the assembly in uplifting prayer through song for the final time this choral season. Letter of Introduction from Fr. Christian

Hello Good People of St. Paul’s.

My name is Christian Baron and I have been asked by Bishop White and your vestry to be useful at St. Paul’s through the end of 2024. I have just wrapped up a position at St. John’s in Crawfordsville, Indiana and am anxious to get started in Oakwood.

I have been a priest for about ten years and have spent time in parishes of all different sizes, shapes and flavors. I’m excited to get to know more about you.

I went to the Seminary of the Southwest in Austin, Texas and graduated in 2014. St. Paul’s will be my fifth parish since being ordained in2014. Before being ordained I did youth ministry at two large parishes in Grand Rapids, MI and I was a seminarian at a large parish in Austin, TX on the campus at the University of Texas.

I’ve been married to my wife, Jodi, for twenty-four years. We like to hike, fish for salmon, camp, laugh and listen to good music. We love to go on road trips and travel. We have three teenage daughters, Montana, Gretchen and Magnolia. Our dog, Daisy, is the sweetest dog on the planet. Our family loves the Grateful Dead.

Other than being a priest, I feel like I’m just a pretty normal/average guy. I love the Church and love to be present as people experience the Divine in new ways. My approach to the priesthood is to collect the gifts that God has given to us and to help put those gifts to use on behalf of the Kingdom of God.

St. Paul's Welcomes Rev. Christian John Baron

This Sunday, we welcome our interim priest-in-charge, Rev. Christian John Baron as he will be joining us for worship for the first time. While his assignment with us is temporary, for about six months, he will provide the pastoral presence and weekly Eucharist we have been missing in recent months and will guide our worship and church operations.

Rev. Baron and his wife, the Rev. Canon Jodi Baron, and their three daughters, recently relocated to Cincinnati. For the past two years, he has served as the priest-in-charge of St. John's Episcopal Church in Crawfordsville, IN. Throughout his ministry he has been immersed in many different cultural contexts and feels comfortable moving in, out and among them. His leadership style is one of collaboration and mutual ministry.

Please welcome him and his family to our church family.
Fr. Christian Baron, Interim Priest-In-Charge
In the short time that I will be with you, my goal is to be present with you on Sundays for worship. I hope to try to help create space for joy and laughter and amazement and wonder about the ways that God is working in and through St. Paul’s. I’ll be present with the staff and help your vestry discern a right path forward for the future. No doubt, you/we have some serious and difficult work to do, but I hope that we can slowly take steps together forward and into the future life of St. Paul’s.

If you have time, I’d love to meet you and your families. I’d love to grab coffee or breakfast or lunch. I’d love for you to show me your favorite parts of Dayton. I’d be honored to hear about your joys and pains of life and about the ways that you have been connected to St. Paul’s over the years.

Look for my St. Paul’s contact information to be communicated soon, and I look forward to meeting you.

MTD Comments: MTD Total Income is off from budget. Pledge is unfavorable to budget by ($11.2k); this is partially offset by favorable Building Use Fees of $5k [the preschool pre-paid the summer months; this will result in unfavorable monthly variances for those months].
MTD Total Expense is off from budget. Primary drivers are unfavorable Buildings & Grounds [$1.5k] and Insurance [$5.5k] (quarterly insurance payment was budgeted in April) partially offset by favorable Administration $2.2k [the Diocese covered the vestry retreat expenses].
YTD Total Income $126.0k vs budget $134.6k; unfavorable variance [$8.6k]
YTD Total Expense $160.4k vs budget $157.7k; unfavorable variance [$2.7k]
YTD Surplus/[Deficit] [$34.4k] vs budget [$23.0k]; unfavorable variance [$11.4k]
YTD Comments: YTD Total Income is off from budget. Primary drivers are unfavorable Pledge & PY Pledge [$22.9k] and Investment Income [$2.2k] partially offset by favorable Non-Pledge Income $12.4k and Building Use Fess $4.6k. YTD Total Expense is off from budget. Unfavorable variances include Insurance [$5.5k] and Utilities [$1.9k] partially offset by favorable Total Clergy, Staff and Contractors $1.1k and Total Administration $1.4k.

In summary, most of the significant variances are due to timing and most accounts are tracking close to budget. Of concern is the $22.9k unfavorable variance in Pledge and PY Pledge. Every parishioner can help by keeping current with your pledges.
