40Love Events Are Underway!
The purpose of 40Love is to honor the 40 days and 40 nights of Lent by engaging in 40 acts of mission in our community. These events will be all over the Miami Valley. In addition, these events will be documented through extensive photography, ending with a photo installation at St. Paul’s for Holy Week.
There are numerous opportunities to participate in 40Love Mission Events that do not require you to be available for a specific date or time. For more information about this project and a full list of events, please refer to pages 4-5 of the March issue of Connections, which has been posted on this web site, or visit the 40Love page on Facebook (search for 40LOVE).
Dayton Deanery Continues Lenten Series
Once again, the churches in the Dayton Deanery are hosting a pilgrimage Lenten Series, Dying to Old, Rising to New: Life in the Spirit. This year’s theme will revolve around how God continues to do new things in our midst, and will offer three different tracks: a biblical track, which explores how God has been in relationship with humanity throughout the ages; an historical track, which will allow each church to discover their own story; and a contemporary track, which will allow us to explore God in culture, primarily through art and music. Sessions will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday evenings through March 23, and will start with a light supper. Churches will take turns hosting. On March 2, Christ Church will host, followed by St. Christopher’s on March 9, St. Margaret’s on March 16, and here at St. Paul’s on March 23. Flyers with details and directions to the churches are available in St. Paul’s Cloister.
Coffee & Conversation
For all who are visiting or new to the congregation, plan to join Jack and Judith in the Parish Library after the 10:30 a.m. service for coffee and conversation on the fourth Sunday of each month. Upcoming dates are January 24, February 28 and March 28. If you have any questions, please call the Church Office at 293-1154.
Critical Dates to Remember for the 2010 Youth Mission Trip
June 19-26, 2010, will be our second trip to the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee to spend a week at Mountain T.O.P. The work is challenging and hot, but the rewards are beyond measure. As always, we go forth to reach out to others in need, offering “hands-on” assistance, fellowship, and support. Further, we go to “be the church” in a setting different from that of our hometown.
Each of our participants will be responsible for the Mountain T.O.P. registration fee of $375, which covers camp lodging, meals from Sunday lunch to Saturday breakfast, materials and project coordination, programs, and camp staffing. Beyond this cost, our group will need to raise funds to cover the costs of transportation and tools for the week, as well as money for our hotel and food on June 20. We raised $500 during the Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper.
Dates to remember:
Sunday, March 14—Meeting in the PaulPit following the 10:30 a.m. service. Anyone who is interested in learning more, or helping plan the trip, is welcome.
Sunday, April 4—Commitment deadline. Notify Sam Davis by this date if you plan to participate in the YMT.
Saturday, April 10—Our next fundraising opportunity will be ROCK THE MISSION! This youth music/art event is held at St. Paul’s, and proceeds will benefit the Youth Mission Trip.
Thursday, April 15—Final deadline to apply for a Youth Mission grant from the Diocese of Southern Ohio. There is a basic grant of $50 regardless of need for any qualified youth. Need-based grants up to $1,000 are also available. Visit http://www.diosohio.org/What%20we%20do/youth-mission-grants.html for more information.
Sunday, May 9—Registration money ($375/person) is due!
If you have any questions, please contact Sam Davis. You also will find us on Facebook—search for St. Paul’s Mission Trip 2010.
Adult Formation—9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings in the Parish Hall
January 10, 17, 24, and 31—Hymnody: How Music Shapes Our Faith
Why do we sing in church? Have you ever wondered what makes a hymn “your favorite?” How did hymns evolve in worship? Who selects the hymns we sing, and what criteria are used? In January we will discuss the history of psalms, hymns and anthems in worship as well as how we as Episcopalians have arrived at our own musical heritage. Join Director of Music John W. Johns as we discover music in worship.
February 7—Nooma: Bullhorn
Parishioners who came to Adult Forum on January 3 already know about Pastor Rob Bell and this excellent DVD series where faith and life intersect. This session delves into Jesus’ mandate to love others unconditionally, as God loves us. But loving everyone around us isn’t really that easy, is it? Come and explore where grace and life meet—just in time for St. Paul’s Annual Meeting!
February 14—St. Paul’s Annual Meeting
There will be no Adult Forum (or other Christian Formation) on February 14, although we will offer Nursery Care, Good News Chapel and Children’s Chapel at 9:30 a.m. Please join us for Holy Eucharist at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Annual Meeting.
Coming to Adult Forum in Lent, February 21-March 28—Seeking God: The Way of the Spirit
This 6-week program will allow us to explore different expressions of spiritual practices, including Benedictine and Celtic spirituality, Taizé, Judaic and Islamic practices, and the Eastern practice of Qi Gong. Come prepared to enliven your spirit! Classes begin on Sunday, February 21 and run through March 28.
In addition to regular Sunday morning Formation classes, the adults of St. Paul’s participate in a variety of social and outreach activities. For more information about these events, or a list of upcoming Adult Forum topics, please refer to our current Connections newsletter, the Christian Formation Programs insert in our September issue of Connections, or our St. Paul’s Episcopal Church group page on Facebook.
Youth Formation—9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings
Younger Youth (Grades 6 – 8) Room 12
Younger Youth (Grades 6 – 8) Room 12
For the younger youth this year there is an interweaving of what they are studying on Sunday mornings, and opportunities for service at St. Paul’s, in the community, and reaching out to the world. They will explore their own identity, talents and gifts, and how they can use those in service to others. Through the year, they will discuss how the understanding of the covenant relationship between God and God’s people developed, was challenged over and over again through the unfaithfulness of the people, and of God’s willingness to take them back.

Youth Confirmation
Plans are already underway for this year’s youth Confirmation journey. Those who are considering Confirmation should attend worship on a regular basis and be active in the life of our congregation.
Instruction began in November and will run through May. Confirmation will be held in conjunction with the other Episcopal Churches in the Dayton Deanery on Pentecost, May 23, 2010, at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church. It will be a special open-air worship service with Bishop Breidenthal presiding.
Children’s Formation—9:30 a.m. Sunday mornings
Young Children - Child care is provided for infants and toddlers. Room 1
Pre-K & K, Grades 1-2
Godly Play Pre-K & K (three years old through kindergarten) Room 17
Godly Play Grades 1-2 Room 13
Godly Play is a Montessori-inspired approach to faith formation that invites children to discover God and gives them the language to express their spirituality. The structure for the morning is based on that of the Holy Communion service. Children are welcomed into the sacred space where they see and hear the story, engage through “wondering questions,” respond through interaction with the story materials or a variety of art medium, gather for prayers, the feast, and saying good bye. Sacred stories, parable stories, and the liturgical cycle of seasons and sacraments are shared through three-dimensional “child-friendly” materials.
Grades 3-5 Workshop Rotation Model Activity Room, Rooms 18 & 19
In Workshop Rotation Model (WoRM), mid- to older elementary students experience a story or theme through stations that allow them to use their different gifts and interests. Some of these stations include storytelling, drama, puppetry, art, movies, computers, cooking, games, writing, and service.
Children’s Formation—10:15 a.m. Sunday Mornings
The Gathering Activity Room
Children in Preschool through Grade 5 gather to sing and have musical instruction. The songs they learn in the Gathering are shared on the Homebound Visits, in the Christmas Pageant, and several times during the year in the 10:30 a.m. worship.
Children’s Formation—10:30 a.m. Sunday Mornings
Young Children Nursery Child Care with Rock-a-bye Room 1
In the Nursery this year, we are introducing a new program called Rock-a-bye Toddlers and Two’s. The monthly Bible story, theme, Bible verse, and “Big Idea” encourage young children to participate in story, music, finger plays and movement, art, and centers. Children have a colorful take-home paper for each week with Bible story activities for the family at home.
Learning Centers & Good News Chapel Pre-K & K Rooms 16 & 17
Children spend about 20 minutes in learning centers such as housekeeping, blocks, puzzles, and play-dough. Then they enjoy a story, song, prayer, and activity based on one of the lectionary readings for the Sunday. The curriculum is Living the Good News.
Children’s Chapel Grades 1 – 5 Chapel of the Holy Spirit
Children’s Chapel offers an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word using the Lectionary reading for the day. The children serve as ushers, crucifers, lectors, music leaders, and prayer leaders. The “sermon” may be an interactive talk, drama, flannel board story, Godly Play set, or book. The participants join the rest of the congregation at the Offertory.
In addition to regular Sunday morning Formation classes, the children of St. Paul’s participate in a variety of outreach activities. For more information about these events, or details about topics for our Sunday morning classes, please refer to the current issue of our Connections newsletter, or the Christian Formation Programs insert in the September issue of Connections.
