Music

The music program at St. Paul's Episcopal Church has a rich history, and is beautifully woven into the liturgy on Sunday mornings and holy days, as well as special services and events throughout the year. Opportunities to participate are available to musicians of every age and talent. Making a joyful noise unto the Lord is fun, satisfying and a beautiful way to give glory to God. Come join us as we raise our voices and/or instruments to the Lord!

 


Chancel ChoirChancel Choir Age 16 and older

The St. Paul’s Chancel Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings at 7:30 p.m. and sings a wide stylistic range of music at every 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning worship service. The choir also provides several special offerings throughout the year, including major works, choral evensongs and holiday services.

Youth Choir Grades 6 through 10

The Youth Choir rehearses on Sundays after the 10:30 a.m. service and sings for 6- to 8-week “quarters” with breaks in between. Choristers may sign up for as many or as few quarters as their schedule allows. They sing their own anthems at regularly scheduled worship services, as well as combined anthems with the Children’s and/or Chancel Choirs.


Children's ChoirChildren’s Choir Grades 3 through 5

The Children’s Choir rehearses on Sundays at 9:15 a.m. and sings for 6- to 8-week “quarters” with breaks in between. Choristers may sign up for as few or as many quarters as their schedule allows. They sing their own anthems at regularly scheduled worship services, as well as combined anthems with the Youth and/or Chancel Choirs.

Handbell ChoirHandbell Choir Age 13 and older

The Handbell Choir rehearses at 6:00 p.m. on Fridays, and ring their own anthems at regularly scheduled worship services, as well as combined anthems with the other Choirs.

John W. Johns Director of Music

John has been the Director of Music at St. Paul's since March of 2008. A graduate of Capital University’s Conservatory of Music, John has sung with the Dayton Opera since 2001, and has been active as a performer and music director in local theatre. He also performs locally at fundraisers and private parties as a pianist and vocalist. As the youngest director of St. Paul’s storied music program, Johns brings energy and enthusiasm to the position and he has great hopes of growth. A guest artist series, special musical presentations and a series highlighting local talent are some of his aspirations for St. Paul’s.


David B. Comer Organist

A native of Dayton, OH, David B. Comer began playing the piano at an early age, his first teacher being his mother. David attended Capital University in Columbus, OH, and studied Church Music and Organ with Janet Linker, Choral Conducting with Dr. E. Richard Shoup and Craig S. Arnold, and Voice with Anthony Vaughan.

David has performed at several notable churches across the country, among them the National Cathedral, Fourth Presbyterian Church (Chicago), and the Crystal Cathedral. He has served at parishes throughout southern Ohio and central Michigan. David has served as a Music Director for The Muse Machine, been an organist for the Summer Film Festival at the former Victory Theater, served as an Audition Accompanist for the Wagner Society of New York, been an organist at church conventions and conferences, and worked with local community theater productions. A church musician for over 30 years, he is a member of the New York City Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.
